 Eustratius George Manuel, in Greek Ευστράτιος Γεώργιος Μανουήλ, was born on 13 March 1889, into a world in which British upper society, the commerce of the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Greek diaspora were inseparable parts of everyday economic life. He belonged to one of the historic Greek families of London and, as confirmed by his Royal Air Force identity record, lived in one of the aristocratic districts, specifically at The Homestead, South Godstone, Surrey.¹ ² His father, Miltiades Manuel son of Basil, or Miltiades Basil Manuel, had been born in Constantinople on 9 July 1841 and later settled in England, where he was recorded as a merchant.³ His mother, Sophia Irene Ionides, or Ioannidis, was born in London, but came from the famous Ionides family, one of the best-known Greek families of the diaspora. She was the daughter of Eustratius Constantine Ionides and Chariclea Xeno, and had been baptized in the historic Greek Orthodox Church of Our Saviour at London Wall, which for decades served as a central point of reference for London’s Greek community.⁴ It was there, in the same Greek Orthodox setting, that Eustratius’s parents were married in 1874, with witnesses drawn from the wider circle of the Ralli, Negroponte, and other prominent families of the Greek mercantile diaspora.⁵ This family background is not a secondary detail. It explains the world in which Eustratius grew up: Greek in origin and ecclesiastical memory, but British in education, public life, and, ultimately, military service. His maternal ancestor, Constantine Ioannes Ionides, had been born in Constantinople in 1775, became a merchant and banker in London, and is remembered as one of the first Greek merchants to settle in England.⁶ The Ionides family was connected with London, Constantinople, Athens, the Rallis, and the great commercial networks of East and West. Thus, when Eustratius George Manuel put on the uniform of the Royal Flying Corps, or RFC, he carried not only a British service identity; he also carried a Greek history of many generations.

 The social and economic position of the Manuel family appears even more clearly in the publication of his father’s will in the British press. According to a notice published in The Illustrated London News in March 1908, the will of “Mr. Meltiades Basil Manuel,” of 2 Marlborough Gate, Hyde Park, who had died on 23 December 1907, was proved on 3 March by Pandely Leonides Argenti, one of its executors. The value of his estate amounted to the considerable sum of £103,640, while the will provided £6,000 for each of his sons Alexander, Stephen, and Eustratius George, and the residue of the estate in equal shares to his six children: Theodore, Alexius Constantine, Alexander, Stephen, Eustratius George, and Irene Mavrogordato.⁷ This information is not merely of financial interest; it places Eustratius within a prosperous, urban, and deeply connected Anglo-Greek family environment, where the ties of Constantinople, London, and the Greek mercantile diaspora continued to shape the social identity of the family’s children. This identity is also reflected in the war memorial of St John’s, Blindley Heath, where Manuel is listed as an officer of the newly formed Royal Air Force, born in London to parents who had come to England from Constantinople. The same memorial notes, as already mentioned, that he lived at The Homestead, South Park, and that he was buried at West Norwood.⁸ Though brief, this wording accurately condenses the essence of the matter: Eustratius Manuel was a child of Greek Constantinople and British London at the same time. Before entering the ranks of aviation, Manuel had already encountered war at a very early stage. His service record bears the notation “1914 Mons Medal,” that is, the recognition connected with the early British campaign in France and Belgium in 1914.⁹ This notation places him among the generation of men who found themselves at war before aviation had yet become a mass military arm. We do not yet know in absolute detail the precise nature of this early service, and we should not attribute operational flying activity to him in 1914 without additional evidence. Nevertheless, the medal shows that Eustratius was not simply one of the later recruits to the air war; he already had behind him service connected with the first harsh years of British involvement.¹⁰

Although aircraft from this early series were photographed only sparingly, comparison with nearby serials — such as C106, C121, C123, and C127, which served with Australian training squadrons in Britain in 1918 — allows for a particularly reliable impression of C169’s form and details. FROM SOLDIER TO AVIATOR

 His official aviation career began at the end of 1915. With effect from 13 December 1915, he was appointed Second Lieutenant on probation in the Royal Flying Corps, Military Wing.¹¹ This appointment was entered in the official state publication, the London Gazette. In the issue of 18 January 1916, under the heading “Royal Flying Corps. Military Wing,” the name “Eustratius George Manuel” appears among those appointed on probation, with effect from 13 December 1915.¹² The same entry into the air arm also appeared in the daily press. On 19 January 1916, The Daily Telegraphincluded “Eustratius G. Manuel” in the list of officers appointed Second Lieutenants on probation in the RFC, with the same effective date.¹³ Finally, Flight, the leading British aviation periodical of the time, also noted the appointment.¹⁴ The repetition of his name in the official gazette, the daily press, and the specialist aviation journal shows that his entry into the military air arm was not simply a barely legible line in a service card, but a fully documented fact of British administration. This was the period in which the RFC was expanding rapidly, absorbing educated young officers, men with technical understanding, linguistic ability, and composure. Eustratius suited that profile. His record notes that he possessed engineering knowledge and fluent knowledge of French.¹⁵ These were not mere bureaucratic observations. In the air war of 1916, the airman was not yet the specialized pilot of a mature air force; he was often observer, technician, officer, and a man who had to understand his aircraft almost mechanically. His first movements within the RFC reveal this gradual aviation career. In March 1916 he appears to have moved from a reserve or training unit to No. 22 Squadron, while shortly afterwards his service path brought him to Nos. 45 and 46 Squadrons.¹⁶ On 1 July 1916 he was formally appointed Flying Officer, and his service card connects this development with his movement toward No. 46 Squadron.¹⁷ In the summer of 1916, Flight noted that Manuel was among the officers whose services as probationers had been confirmed, while he also appeared in the published notices as a Flying Officer.¹⁸ From that moment onward, we are no longer speaking merely of an officer training in aviation, but of a pilot who had assumed a flying role at a time when the RFC stood at the forefront of technological and tactical transition. The world in which the young Anglo-Greek flew was dangerous, unstable, and constantly changing. Aircraft were changing rapidly; engines had their peculiarities; the boundaries between trainer, reconnaissance machine, fighter, and prototype were not always clear; and pilots were often called upon to fly machines with entirely different handling characteristics. His service record reveals that Eustratius had acquired experience on an impressively large number of aircraft. Among the types listed are Avro, B.E.2c, B.E.2b, Nieuport Scout, Bristol Scout, Sopwith 1½ Strutter, Sopwith Pup, Sopwith Camel, Sopwith Dolphin, D.H.5, and D.H.9.¹⁹ Read properly, this list is almost a small history of British aviation during the war. Manuel had flown aircraft from the early stages of the RFC, as well as newer fighters, single-seat and two-seat machines belonging to the phase of major technological maturation. He was not a pilot of one type only. He was a pilot who could move between different types, understand their behaviour, and adapt. This very element would become decisive at the end of his life. His service, however, did not proceed without interruption. In the autumn of 1916, after he had already entered active aviation service, his course was halted by a serious medical issue or injury. His service card shows him leaving No. 46 Squadron and ending up in hospital in October 1916.²⁰ The medical boards that followed judged him temporarily unfit for general service, allowing him only home or light duty.²¹ We do not yet know the exact cause. It may have been illness, accident, strain, or a consequence of air service itself. What we do know is that the interruption lasted several months, and that only on 26 March 1917 was he judged fit again for flying service.²² In his biography, this period should not be read coldly, as a mere medical note. It was a pause within a life moving at great speed. Eustratius had already passed through early wartime service, had joined the RFC, had become a Flying Officer, and had begun to acquire experience in squadrons and aircraft types. Suddenly he found himself outside normal service. For an airman in 1916, this meant uncertainty. Would he return to flying? Would he again be considered fit? Would he be able to continue in a branch that demanded physical endurance, technical precision, and mental steadiness? The answer came in the spring of 1917, when he was again declared fit for service.

 His return did not simply lead him back to a squadron. Gradually, his career took on a more technical and specialized character. In 1918, as the war approached its climax, Manuel appears in duties connected with the ferrying, delivery, and testing of aircraft. In April 1918 he was posted to Coventry Aircraft Acceptance Park, with duties that can be read on his card as ferry pilot.²³ This meant that he flew aircraft from one point to another, from acceptance establishments to aerodromes or other destinations. It was not a secondary role. The ferry pilot had to trust machines he did not always know, manage different types, and fly aircraft that had often only just been accepted, repaired, or prepared for delivery. A little later he was moved to Lincoln Aircraft Acceptance Park, this time as delivery pilot.²⁴ His role was becoming even clearer: Manuel was no longer only a pilot with wartime experience, but a man useful to the technical system that supplied the air force with aircraft. At the end of the spring of 1918, the newly formed Royal Air Force, created on 1 April by the merger of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service, needed precisely such men: experienced pilots, with technical understanding, able to fly many different aircraft and evaluate them in practice. In Eustratius’s service record, at the formation of the RAF, he appears as a Lieutenant, with effect from 1 April 1918.²⁵ Beyond his practical usefulness to the service, Manuel had also begun to take part in the wider discussion about what made a man suitable for flying. This is one of the most interesting dimensions of his biography. In the medical journal The Lancet, on 28 September 1918, an article was published under the title “The Essential Characteristics of Successful and Unsuccessful Aviators, with Special Reference to Temperament,” signed by T. S. Rippon, Captain, R.A.M.C., attached R.A.F., and **E. G. Manuel, Lieutenant, R.A.F.**²⁶ The article appeared after his death, but its content shows that Manuel had already contributed to one of the most modern concerns of wartime aviation: the selection, evaluation, and understanding of the airman’s temperament. The introduction to the study itself explained that the authors were respectively a pilot with 600 hours’ experience and a medical officer stationed at an aerodrome.²⁷ This detail is extremely important. Six hundred flying hours, by First World War standards, was not a small number. It indicates an airman far more experienced than the average young pilot who passed rapidly from school to squadron. The Rippon–Manuel study did not attempt to present the pilot as a superhuman figure. On the contrary, it stressed that the successful aviator was usually a man with the proper temperament, composure, humour, athletic inclination, quick adaptation, and a particular kind of practical intelligence.²⁸ On 3 October 1918, Flight published an extensive summary of the same study, emphasizing that the observations of Rippon and Eustratius Manuel led to the conclusion that the successful aviator was not a “super-man,” but a man with the right temperament.²⁹ For its time, this idea is remarkable. Aviation had not yet developed modern aviation psychology or mature pilot selection testing. RAF officers and medical men were trying, through the experience of war, to understand why some men became excellent pilots while others, though brave or capable in other fields, could not endure flying. Manuel, as a pilot of considerable experience, was not simply an object of this discussion; he was one of the men helping to shape it. Even more revealing is a later publication in Flight, dated 1 May 1919, which referred to demonstrations of physical efficiency tests for pilots developed by the Royal Air Force Medical Service. It explained that one of the relevant machines had been designed by Major Rippon and Lieutenant Manuel, in collaboration with F. Koolhoven of the British Aerial Transport Co.³⁰ This information shows that Manuel was connected not only with the practical side of flying, but also with the applied study of the airman’s abilities and the development of auxiliary means of assessment. In other words, his progress toward ferry, delivery, and test-pilot duties was not simply the result of experience in the air, but also the expression of a man with genuine technical interest and reflection upon the very profession of flying.

1914 MONS star medal
The 1914 Star, often informally known as the “Mons Star,” was one of the most distinctive medals awarded to the first generation of British soldiers of the Great War. It was instituted for those who served in France or Belgium with units of the British Expeditionary Force between 5 August and midnight on 22/23 November 1914. The name “Mons Star” became common because of the medal’s association with the first major British engagement at Mons, although it does not necessarily mean that every recipient fought in that particular battle. The design of the medal visually condenses this early period of the war. For Eustratius George Manuel, the notation “1914 Mons Medal” on his service record is of particular importance. It shows that before he entered the Royal Flying Corps, and long before he served as an experienced pilot, ferry pilot, delivery pilot, and finally test pilot of the newly formed Royal Air Force, he had already experienced the war during the earliest and harshest phase of British involvement on the Western Front. Manuel therefore belonged not only to the generation of pioneers of military aviation, but also to the generation of the men of 1914 — those who were in France and Belgium when the war had not yet assumed its fully industrial character and Britain was only beginning its great struggle. This detail casts the career of the Anglo-Greek officer in a different light. Before becoming an airman, he was already a veteran of the war’s first phase. Before wearing the identity of the Royal Flying Corps, he had served in the older military world of the British Expeditionary Force. TEST PILOT - HIS FINAL FLIGHT

 His final posting came at the beginning of June. From Lincoln A.A.P. he was moved to Hendon Aircraft Acceptance Park, with duties recorded in AIR 76 as Test Pilot.³¹ This phrase is decisive. Eustratius Manuel did not find himself at Hendon by chance, nor was he killed during a simple transfer flight. He had now moved into the role of test pilot. Such a role required experience, composure, and technical sensitivity. The test pilot had to feel the aircraft, perceive its response, assess whether it was safe, and fly it in conditions where the margin for error could be minimal. Manuel’s service path — squadrons, different aircraft types, technical knowledge, ferrying and delivery of aircraft, and the study of flying aptitude — naturally led to this final duty. On 8 June 1918, only a few days after his posting to Hendon, Lieutenant Eustratius George Manuel was killed in an aviation accident. His service record registers it with the cold brevity of military archives: “Killed. Aero Acci. 8/6/18.”³² The unit was A.A.P. Hendon. The service was at home, not at the front. Yet the danger was real. On the same day, the Kingston Aviation diary for the Sopwith aircraft records that the pilot of Hendon Sopwith Camel C169 was killed when the aircraft stalled in a low-altitude turn.³³ A moving obituary written by a friend of Eustratius Manuel adds a precious human element to his figure. He is described there as “a thorough little sportsman,” “one of the old Army,” and holder of the 1914 Star, while it is emphasized that, although he possessed a “humorously pessimistic outlook,” he was in reality far from true pessimism, having steadiness of character, a sense of duty, and broad cultivation. The same friend stressed that “there were few subjects on which he was not unusually well informed,” and that his sharpness of mind and humour made him a beloved companion.³⁴ These few lines bring to life the man behind the file: perhaps small in stature, athletic, intelligent, ironic, but not at all cynical; a man who saw the war clearly, without losing either humour or duty.

Its westward course symbolizes the end of the life and service of Eustratius George Manuel, another Greek of the diaspora who wore a foreign uniform yet carried his Greek heritage within him. The same obituary also provides the fullest description so far of the accident. According to it, Manuel took off from the aerodrome when the engine stopped. As he turned back to land, another aeroplane crossed his path and, in attempting to avoid it, he stalled, falling from so low a height that there was no margin for recovery before impact.³⁵ This was not an inexperienced pilot who simply lost control. It was an experienced test pilot, an engine failure, a second aircraft in his path, a forced evasive manoeuvre, and a stall at a height that forgave nothing. His death was the result of a chain of instantaneous dangers — the kind that early aviation knew well, and which could take the life even of the most capable pilot. The Sopwith Camel was legendary, but it was a demanding aircraft. The very sensitivity that made it dangerous for careless or inexperienced pilots made it a machine requiring absolute attention, especially at low altitude. In the case of Eustratius Manuel, there is no need to add anything beyond what the sources say: death came instantly, in an environment as dangerous as the front, even without enemy fire.

 The news of his death did not remain confined to British aviation circles. It also reached the Greek press. The report in the newspaper Patris, under the title “Death of a Greek Aviator,” presented Manuel as a member of the “well-known family of the Manuels, British in citizenship but Greek in origin,” and as the youngest son of the late Miltiades Manuel.³⁶ Although the text contains certain inaccuracies or loose statements concerning his exact age and the technical circumstances of the accident, it is highly valuable because it preserves the Greek dimension of his loss. The newspaper emphasized that Manuel had served in the British Army on the Western Front and had been called to England for duties connected with aviation, where he met his death while testing a new machine.³⁷ Even more importantly, the Greek report saw his death not as an isolated incident, but as part of the wartime contribution of an entire family. It mentioned his brothers and his brother-in-law, noting their service in various theatres and positions during the war: Theodore Manuel, connected with the Italian front and decorated; Alexander and/or Constantine Manuel on the French front; Stephen Manuel at the War Office in London; and George Mavrogordato, a Captain also on the Western Front.³⁸ Despite the orthographic and syntactical difficulties of the clipping, the essence is clear: the death of Eustratius George Manuel was understood by the Greek community as the loss of a Greek of Britain, a member of a family deeply rooted in British life without having been severed from its Greek identity. His death was reported to the family through his brother, who appears in the card as the person to be informed in the event of misfortune. Different sections of the file contain different initials and addresses of relatives, showing that the Manuel family remained established within the circles of London and Surrey.³⁹ Manuel himself was buried in the Hellenic Enclosure of West Norwood Cemetery in London, with the family record giving the plot as 42.31135.⁴⁰ His burial there is deeply symbolic. The West Norwood Hellenic Enclosure was not merely a cemetery. It was a place of memory for the Greek community of London, a place where families such as the Manuels and the Ionides were laid to rest — people who had carried the Greek presence from Constantinople and the Mediterranean into nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Britain. His parents were also buried in the same Greek setting: his father, Miltiades Basil Manuel, in 1907, and his mother, Sophia Irene Ionides, in 1905.⁴¹ Thus, the circle of his life closed where his family identity had begun: in the Greek community of London. Manuel died as an officer of the Royal Air Force, but his memory returned to the Greek ground of his ancestors.

The biography of Eustratius George Manuel is valuable precisely because it unites several histories in one. It is a history of the Greek diaspora, a history of early British aviation, and the story of a man who passed from the old generation of the infantrymen of 1914 into the technical aviation world of 1918. He was an officer of the RFC, later a Lieutenant of the RAF, a pilot experienced on numerous aircraft types, a man who knew the interruption of service and returned, and finally a test pilot on one of the most demanding fighters of the war. His participation in the study of the characteristics of successful and unsuccessful aviators shows that he was not simply a man who flew; he was a man who thought about flying, who understood its demands, and who helped to formulate, even in an early form, questions that would later occupy the whole field of aviation medicine and psychology. His loss at Hendon, on 8 June 1918, was not merely another line in a list of aviation accidents. It was the end of a brief but full path, in which a Greek of Britain served at the threshold between the old military world and the birth of modern military aviation.

In the case of Eustratius George Manuel, this process was applied both to his photographic portrait and to the scanned documents connected with his death, especially the issue of the Greek newspaper Patris and the article entitled “Death of a Greek Aviator.” The processing of the scanned documents was strictly limited to technical improvements: straightening, perspective correction, brightness and contrast balancing, clearer presentation of the margins, and the creation of enlarged insets so that the relevant article could be read more easily. No words were added, no text was rewritten, no typographical or historical details were corrected, and no original wear, shadows, stamps, marks, or traces of reproduction were removed. Likewise, Manuel’s portrait was not treated as the basis for a new or imaginary image, but as a primary visual document. His posture, facial features, expression, moustache, clothing, strap, and all other visible elements of his military appearance were preserved as they appear in the original photograph. Any enhancement was applied only to support clarity and presentation, not to alter identity, expression, uniform details, or historical evidence. In this sense, every restored or improved version remains dependent on the original source and must never be understood as a replacement for it. The final visual composition therefore functions as a bridge between the person and the historical record. Manuel’s portrait, the full newspaper page, and the enlarged article clipping are not presented as decorative elements, but as interconnected pieces of evidence. Presented together, these elements form different layers of historical testimony: the newspaper publication, the archival scan, the isolated article, and the photographic memory of the man himself. The use of AΙ in this context acts as an extension of historical research. It makes the material clearer, more accessible, and more coherent for the modern reader, while remaining faithful to the authenticity, limitations, and evidentiary value of the original sources.
